Photo Settings
Resolution, macro, flash, long exposure, timer and front camera.
Photo and resolution: Trade file size against detail and lens choice.
Photo uses your photo resolution from Media settings: 12 MP (to start), 24 MP or 48 MP. The choice appears only on iPhones with a 48 MP camera.
- 12 MP uses every rear lens, switching as you zoom.
- 24 and 48 MP use the main lens alone, so the lens buttons are 1x and 2x only. 24 MP is a 48 MP shot made smaller, about half the file size.
- Any zoom other than 1x and True Color are always 12 MP. LiDAR photos have their own size, under Media settings, LiDAR, Photo Resolution: 12 MP, or 24 and 48 MP on iPhones whose LiDAR camera offers them, always with the depth map.
Photos save as HEIC (JPEG on iPhones without it), with quality put first, the way the phone was held.
Macro: Off to start, and hidden on some iPhones and modes.
The flower in the top row, Photo only, rear camera. It switches to the ultra-wide lens and focuses a few centimeters away, so get close; the view is wide. It saves at that lens's largest size. Off to start. Hidden on iPhones whose ultra-wide can't focus that close, and in True Color or LiDAR photo.
Flash and True Color: Warn your team first; the torch switches it off.
The flash button cycles Off, Auto, On and True Color (the rainbow). True Color fires the flash every time to record colors as they'd look in daylight: good for minerals and cave life. It uses the main lens at 12 MP, Photo only. Warn your team first. If your iPhone can't do it, SpeleoMap says so once and drops it from the cycle.
Torch and flash are either/or: turning the torch on sets the flash to Off, and choosing a flash turns the torch off.
Long exposure: Works with LiDAR photo too, and the shot gets marked.
Holds the shutter open up to about 1 second, with the sensitivity lowered to match, for a cleaner shot in the dark. Rest the phone on something and use the timer. It works in LiDAR photo too, and the photo is marked Long Exp.
Timer: Take the shot without touching the phone.
Off, 3 seconds or 10 seconds. Tap the shutter during the countdown to cancel.
Front camera: What you lose when you flip around.
Saved mirrored, like the iPhone Camera app. No torch, flash, ultra-wide, macro, True Color, LiDAR, Action mode or Range on the front camera; volume down takes the photo.
