3.5.1 · Survey a Cave
Plan a Route
The screen, picking lines, and the route to a point.
What it is: Works without north too, just with no bearings.
Lock the entrance when you start a caving workout (GPS, and north if you can), and with no line recording the cave screen becomes the Navigator: the lines tied to this entrance, the entrance (ENT) and your live position. Nothing is recorded until you start a Cave Line. With GPS but no north it works in the trip frame, with no bearings. A workout with no entrance GPS, or a resumed one, shows your lists instead.
The screen: Where each button sits and how Follow works.
Across the top: Guide Lines, Measure, 2D/3D, Layers and the torch, with the compass top right. Along the bottom: the readout on the left (the XYZ widget above it in 3D), then Follow, Snap and Go on the right. Follow centers the map on you; tap it again once centered (2D, north locked) to switch heading-up and north-up. The hike map uses the same layout. Every button is in the Icon Directory.
Pick your lines: Ones you record or route to switch on automatically.
Every line starts off, so a cave with ten lines doesn't crowd the screen. Open Guide Lines and switch on the ones you want. Lines you record on the trip stay on, and picking a station on a hidden line for Go or Snap switches that line on.
Go to a point: Search or sort by nearest to find the target.
Tap Go (the scope, bottom right) and pick a station, the entrance or a datum. The list is grouped by line, with search and Sort (By line or Nearest). The chip under the compass shows the target and how far it is: tap it to stop, or tap Go to pick another.
The route: Bold on screen; unused lines turn gray.
SpeleoMap finds the shortest way along the survey, across every line that is on. Lines join only at stations and line ends (within about 2 m level and 1 m height), so a route never cuts through rock between two passages that only pass close. The route is drawn bold and the lines it doesn't use turn gray. Off the survey, a white ring marks where to rejoin it; nothing is drawn off the survey. It follows the recorded waypoints and never jumps a gap in a line wider than 3 m.
