Every trip counted.
SpeleoMap logs every cave survey and hike as a real Apple Health workout — active calories, distance, heart rate, and depth below the entrance, automatically. Your Activity Rings close. Your cave trips are on the record.

Metrics captured every trip
SpeleoMap records the following for every cave survey and hike workout:
- Active calories. energy burned during the workout, from HealthKit's motion fusion
- Basal calories. resting energy burned during the session. Combined with active calories for a total calorie picture
- Distance. total distance traveled, from HealthKit's motion fusion
- Steps. cumulative step count for the workout
- Heart rate. live bpm, plus average, max, and min for the session. Requires Apple Watch or a paired HR source. See Settings → Workout → Heart rate tracking
- Max depth below entrance. The deepest point reached during the workout, measured in meters below the altitude at workout start. Tracked via the iPhone's barometric altimeter. No GPS needed underground.
A note on depth
Depth is tracked using the iPhone's built-in barometric altimeter, measuring altitude relative to where you started the workout. Start the workout at the cave entrance, walk in — SpeleoMap records how far below the entrance you go and saves the maximum depth to the trip summary.
If you start the workout already inside the cave, max depth is measured from that start point rather than the entrance — still useful, just labeled accordingly in the trip summary.
Flights climbed is intentionally not tracked. Apple's floor counter is built around a stair-climbing gait — it reads near zero on cave pitches, rappels, chimneys, and breakdown scrambles. Depth via barometer is the honest metric for vertical in a cave.
Hike route in Apple Health
Hike Line workouts can write a GPS route to Apple Health alongside the workout — the same line SpeleoMap draws on the trail map, saved to your Health profile. Enable or disable in Settings → Hike.
Activity Type
Caving vs Hiking
SpeleoMap logs two workout types depending on what you're doing:
- Caving. Cave exploration, passages, mixed terrain. Logged to Apple Health as a walking workout. The closest activity type available in iOS for horizontal cave travel. Calorie estimates are based on walking metabolism.
- Hiking. surface approaches and trail walks to and from the cave. Logged as a hiking workout
You choose the activity type when starting a project. Change the default in Settings → Workout → Activity type.
Saving to Health
How workouts save
When you end a workout, SpeleoMap writes it to Apple Health automatically — Activity Ring credit, a workout entry in the Health app, and all metric samples. SpeleoMap requests only the permissions it needs; you grant access through the standard iOS Health authorization sheet on first use.
Discarding a workout
If you started a workout by accident or ran a test trip you don't want on your Health profile, tap Discard when ending the workout. A discarded workout ends the session without writing anything to Apple Health — no ring credit, no entry. The trip data stays in SpeleoMap either way.
