Shooting Thermal

Thermal photos and video, ThermDAR and scans.

Thermal in the camera: The live heat picture, palette, surface and layers.
The thermometer at the right end of the row under the shutter, in the camera with or without a line open.
  • Gray with a slash: no FLIR connected. Tap it to connect, or to set one up.
  • On: the FLIR's live picture fills the screen with a crosshair and the temperature at the center.
  • Palette (top): tap for the next one, press and hold for the list: Iron, Rainbow, White hot, Black hot, Arctic or Lava. A tap shows the name for a moment.
  • Surface: tap for the next emissivity, press and hold for the list (below).
  • Battery: the FLIR's own charge, red under 20%.
  • Layers: Scale bar, Hottest and coldest spots, IR only (no MSX edges) and Lock scale (holds the color range so shots compare).

Turn LiDAR on as well for ThermDAR (below). Range hides while Thermal is on. The torch and volume buttons work as usual, and an open line keeps its place underneath.

Thermal photos: Temperatures stay readable; the FLIR's visual photo comes too.
In Photo, the shutter or volume up saves a thermal photo: FLIR's radiometric JPEG, with every pixel's temperature, the palette and the emissivity inside. It also keeps the FLIR's own visual photo on the same tile: Thermal | Visual switches between them in the viewer, and temperatures read on Thermal. Your Photos app gets both pictures, the thermal one exactly as FLIR wrote it, so it keeps its temperatures too.
ThermDAR photos and video: Heat with a real distance on every pixel.
Turn on LiDAR (left end of the row) and Thermal together: a thermal photo becomes a ThermDAR photo. A ring sits around the crosshair with the temperature above and the distance below. One tile keeps the FLIR thermal picture, its visual picture and a LiDAR photo. ThermDAR video records the thermal clip with a LiDAR depth track. In the line camera, thermal shots are ThermDAR whenever the survey has depth.

In the viewer, a ThermDAR shot has both Temperature and Measure, so you can measure real sizes on the heat (how wide a cold patch is, how far away). Needs the thermal Overlay (Settings, Calibration). More in Measure on LiDAR Photos and Video.

Thermal video: Pick the temperature frame rate; stops before storage fills.
In Video, record as usual. The clip is the picture as you see it, with no sound, plus a full temperature frame saved every second, so you can read temperatures on a paused clip. Change the rate in Settings, Media, Thermal, Clip: 1 per second, 2 per second or 1 every 5 seconds. Recording stops on its own before storage runs out.
ThermDAR scans: Heat painted onto the 3D scan.
On the Scans tab, tap ThermDAR (or Scan, ThermDAR on a station): a LiDAR scan that also saves FLIR temperature frames, 4 a second to start (Settings, Media, Thermal, Scan). After the scan bakes, every point of the mesh gets its temperature, and the viewer opens on Thermal. See Take a Scan and View a Scan.
