7.1.2 · Workouts and Training

Heart Rate, Depth and Elevation

Heart rate, max depth, elevation and Stow distance.

Heart rate: What your watch adds to the trip.
SpeleoMap reads your heart rate from Apple Health while the workout runs (Workout settings, Heart). It works best with an Apple Watch, which sends readings within moments.

Other watches and fitness bands whose app saves heart rate to Apple Health work too, but their readings arrive when their app syncs, so the live number can lag, and readings that sync only after you end the workout aren't counted in its summary. Until a live reading arrives, the last known one shows with a ~. Turning tracking on or off takes effect on the next workout.

Heart rate between workouts: Why the reading can be minutes old.
With no workout running, the bar at the bottom of the Workout tab shows the newest heart rate in Apple Health, with when it was measured. Tap it to fetch the latest. An iPhone can't measure heart rate itself: the reading comes from your watch, which measures only every few minutes when you're not exercising and syncs in batches, so it can be several minutes old.
Max depth: Record how deep the trip went.
The barometer tracks how far below the workout's starting point you go. Start the workout at the entrance and the trip records your maximum depth below it, with no GPS needed underground. Time with the phone under water, like a swim, doesn't count as depth.
Two elevations: Why the workout card and the Cave Line can differ a little.
The workout (its card, Apple Health, max depth, elevation gain and loss) uses the barometer: how much you climbed, even in the dark or stowed. The Cave Line (profile, line stats, exports) uses tracking, which is more precise between stations; the barometer only checks it for jumps. They answer different questions, so they can differ slightly.
Height and Stow distance: Get Stow distances closer to the truth.
Your height gives Stow Mode a starting estimate for walking distance and sets the default chest mount height, until you calibrate your walking style. Set it in Profile settings.

Stow Mode distance comes from your own calibration runs, one set per movement style; walking hand-held with the camera doesn't change it. To start over, delete a style's runs on its screen (Calibrate a Style).
