Calibrate a Style
Teach Stow Mode how you move, so distances are yours.
Why: What Stow Mode guesses until you calibrate.
Every caver crawls differently. Before calibration, walking uses your height and the other styles use a typical speed:
If you move faster or slower than these, your distances are off by the same amount. Calibrating each style you use gives your real distances.
| Style | Typical speed |
|---|---|
| Walking | From your height |
| Hands and knees | 0.98 ft/s (0.30 m/s) |
| Belly crawl | 0.39 ft/s (0.12 m/s) |
| Side crawl | 0.33 ft/s (0.10 m/s) |
| On back | 0.25 ft/s (0.08 m/s) |
| Swimming | 1.31 ft/s (0.40 m/s) |
| Custom | 0.66 ft/s (0.20 m/s) |
Set your height under Settings, Profile. With your chest facing down, SpeleoMap assumes hands and knees unless the phone drops low enough to mean a belly crawl.
Run a calibration: The exact taps, start to finish.
Open Stow Mode settings, tap your mount, open a style and tap Calibrate. Hold the phone up: tap Start mark, walk at least 3 m (10 ft), tap End mark, walk back. Tap Start calibration, stow the phone and move to the end mark in that style. Take it out and tap Done.
Do a few: How many runs to do, and removing bad ones.
Several runs make a better average. Each run is listed on the style's screen; swipe one to delete it, or tap Select to delete several.
Learning: Let real caving improve your calibration over time.
With Learning on, a stowed stretch in one style that ends with a snap to a known station within 2 minutes is saved as a field run and refines that style. The newest 20 are kept.
Your stride doesn't change in the middle of a walk; it only learns from calibration runs and stations. Swipe a field run on the style's screen to delete it.
Custom styles: For the odd moves your cave demands.
Move in a way that isn't listed? Add style, Custom, name it, and calibrate it at least twice. Once it says Recognized by feel, Stow Mode switches to it when your movement matches.
Those runs teach Stow Mode how the phone tilts and how rough and rhythmic the movement is. If it feels the same as a built-in style, either one gives you the same distance.
