2.1.2 · Hike to the Cave

Measure, Navigate and End

Measure the map, head for a point, end at the entrance.

Measure on the map: Answer how far or how high before moving.
Multi, Area, Shot (from you), Along and Height (along the guide line when one is on, else the line you're recording), and Project (bearing and distance from here, can become a pin). Every leg shows its length; the eraser clears. Nothing is saved on the live map.

Closing Measure also clears. Layers turns the compass, pins and the GPS readout on and off.

Head for a destination: Navigate fully offline to an entrance or the car.
Open Pins and type coordinates (or press and hold Drop Pin). Any format works: decimal degrees, DMS, UTM, MGRS or a map link. Or press and hold the map to drop a pin exactly there. Tap Go (bottom right) and pick a pin: the distance updates and the compass needle turns to it. On a line shown on the map the route follows that line; otherwise a dotted line runs straight there (see Hike Pins).

You can also tap Go on a pin in the pin list. It works fully offline; tap the chip under the compass to stop.

End at the entrance: Wrapping up a line versus wrapping up the day.
Tap End at the cave entrance; the map clears, ready for the next line. Review it from the Action tab: Map on Apple Maps, Plan, Profile or 3D, each with a Ruler, Survey tools (Shot, Along, Height, Area) and Layers. Save keeps a measurement as a note (Save Measurements and Notes). Export the trail as GPX or KML from Export Formats.

End asks you to confirm. For the next line tap New Hike Line again; end the workout on the Workout tab when the day is done.

View a hike line: Check climb, distance and bearings after the walk.
Tap a hike line in the Action tab lists. Map shows the trail on Apple Maps with the basemap, Ruler, Survey tools and Layers. Plan, Profile and 3D work like the Cave Line viewer: Home, the full-screen landscape viewer, Ruler, Survey tools and Layers (pins, pin labels, grid, compass, XYZ).

Survey tools: Shot (distance and true bearing between two points), Along (distance following the trail), Height (how much you went up and down between two points, and the net change), and Area in Plan. Profile switches between Time and Distance. The compass always points to true north. The measure bar reads Save, tools, Clear: Save keeps the readout as a Measure note, on its pin when it has one. Every tool is in The Hike Line Viewer.
