2.1.1 · Hike to the Cave

Set Up and Walk

Set up at the car, calibrate, and walk the trail.

Set up at the car: Prep that keeps the whole day in one place.
Pick a map style, coordinate format and trail cadence in Hike settings. Make one project for the whole trip: hike in, cave survey and hike out all live together.
Calibrate at the trailhead: Do this once per workout, before any recording.
Start a Hiking workout on the Workout tab. A Hike Line needs State C: a GPS fix (usually under 30 seconds outdoors) and a true-north lock. See Calibration. Then on the Action tab tap New Hike Line, name it, pick a color and Begin Recording.

Precise Location must be on in iOS Settings. Starting the workout does not start a line.

On the trail: Where every button sits while you're walking.
Your path draws live on the map, with Pause, End and Drop Pin underneath. Across the top: Pins, Measure, Guide Lines and Layers, with the compass top right. Along the bottom: the GPS readout on the left, then Follow, Go and Basemap (Standard, Satellite, Hybrid, Topographic) on the right, the same layout as the cave map. Tap the map to hide the tools. Under heavy trees or in canyons, SpeleoMap bridges gaps with the motion sensors and compass, then snaps back to GPS.

Follow cycles between following you and following your heading. The red cone shows which way you are facing.

GPS and tree cover: What to expect when the GPS readout looks shaky.
GPS works without cell service but needs a view of the sky. Under heavy trees or in canyons, SpeleoMap uses the motion sensors and compass to keep the line going, then snaps back to GPS when the signal returns.
Follow a line: Retrace an old track or one shared as GPX.
Tap Guide Lines and switch on any lines to follow, each dashed in its color. Every line starts off; the eye hides them all again. The ON ROUTE / OFF ROUTE chip (30 m) buzzes when you leave and come back. Import GPX or KML lines there, export a line with its pins, or delete one.
