4.1 · Stow Mode

How It Works

Put the phone away for crawls and keep the line recording.

What it is: For crawls and climbs where holding the phone isn't safe.
When you stow the phone, SpeleoMap switches from the camera to the motion sensors and keeps tracing your Cave Line, so you can crawl, climb and squeeze hands-free.

Use it in tight crawls, vertical sections or anywhere holding the phone is impractical or unsafe. If you need both hands, stow the phone and keep moving.

Wear it, don't pack it: Where to carry it so readings stay usable.
Use a chest rig, bib pocket or chest pouch, a snug hip pocket, or a tightly strapped backpack: anywhere it can't slide or turn. Loose in a pack or pocket isn't supported. Keep it away from carabiners, batteries and knives.
Set up a mount: Why a chest crawl and a hip crawl differ.
Tell SpeleoMap how you wear it: where, which way the screen faces, which way the top points. Do it once per mount in Stow Mode settings. Each mount keeps its own movement styles.

Under Mount, tap a mount to show its styles; its Settings sets it up and makes it the active mount. SpeleoMap uses it to read your heading and posture, and a crawl looks different to a phone on your chest than on your hip.

Stow and come back: The handoff between camera and pocket.
With a Cave Line recording, press home or swipe up to background the app. Don't close it. Walk a few steps before you crawl. When you come out, open the app, hold steady for a moment, then drop a station.

Holding steady gives the camera a moment to find its place.

Styles, water and rope: How distance is worked out for each way you move.
Stow Mode tells walking, hands and knees, belly, side, back and swimming apart by how the phone tilts and moves. Under water it holds depth and uses your swim speed. On ropes, ladders and climbs it follows the barometer up or down. To get your own distances, calibrate each style.

Walking distance comes from your steps; crawling distance from how long you move and how fast you crawl. For water, use a waterproof pouch, add a Swimming style to your mount and calibrate it in the water.
