Caving, rescue, survey software and conservation.

Caving

Caving in the US runs through the National Speleological Society and its local chapters, called grottos. Find a grotto near you to cave safely with experienced cavers, learn the craft and look after the caves you visit.

Not a member yet? Join the NSS for 80+ years of NSS publications including the NSS News, access to NSS cave preserves, discounts on cave rescue training and gear, and exploration and science grants. Your dues fund cave preserves, science and exploration.

Cave rescue

The National Cave Rescue Commission trains cavers and rescue teams in cave rescue across the US. A course is worth taking before you ever need it.

In the app, Rescue mode keeps the way out and a 911 card ready underground.

Survey software

Survex and Therion turn survey data into cave maps and 3D models, and SpeleoMap exports straight to both (Export Formats). TopoDroid is the Android survey app many teams work alongside.

Surveyors and cartographers trade methods and maps in the NSS Survey and Cartography Section.

Conservation

Caves recover slowly, and so do their bats. The White-nose Syndrome Response Team explains the disease that has killed millions of North American bats and how cavers help stop it, starting with clean gear between caves. Bat Conservation International protects bats and the caves they need.

The Cave Research Foundation and the National Speleological Foundation support cave research, survey and conservation.
